Donna Kostyu, Ph.D.
As an academic dean, I support students who live or did live in Alspaugh House. I am also the Director of the Health Professions Advising Office, where we work with freshmen, sophomores, juniors, seniors and alumni who are applying to medical, dental, veterinary and other health professions schools.
I grew up in Cleveland, received a B.S. degree from Heidelberg University in Tiffin Ohio, and worked in viral research at Case Western Reserve University. Then I moved to Durham and took a research position in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology. Kidney transplantation in humans was just beginning to be successful and there was an international effort to identify the genes important in matching. I received my PhD in Immunology at Duke and spent 20 years unraveling the polymorphism and function of the HLA genes. Along the way I studied populations, traveled, wrote papers, taught an Introductory Immunology class to graduate and undergraduate students and mentored students in independent studies and prehealth. In 2001, I became an Assistant Director of the PreMajor Advising Center and began to work with undergraduates full-time.
