John H. Blackshear
As an Academic Dean I provide support for first-year students residing in the Jarvis and Bell Tower dorms. In addition, I am the Diversity and STEM Pathways Officer for Trinity College of Arts and Sciences as well as the Director of the Duke STEM Pathways for Inclusion, Research and Excellence Fellows Program. I serve as the Faculty-in-Residence for Giles dorm and I am instructor in the Department of Psychology and Neuroscience. I also serve on the Trinity Diversity Advisory Committee.
I have worked at Duke University since 2001 in various capacities. I served as a psychologist at Duke’s Counseling and Psychological Services, a support liaison for the Trinity College’s Early Alert System, and Clinical Director of the Academic Resource Center. Additionally, I am Duke’s Student Ombudsman and the instructor for Forensic Psychology in Psychology and Neuroscience.
I received my bachelors of science and masters of science degrees in psychology from Florida A&M University. I completed my Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Georgia State University and am currently licensed in the state of North Carolina. I also have a private practice in Raleigh, NC where I specialize in forensic psychology, post traumatic stress disorder, psychological assessment, eating disorders, family and couples psychology, and general psychology for individuals ages 13 and up.
I am the proud father of five and love spending time with my wife, Kimberly, and our children. Additionally, I am an avid reader and a fervent lover of all music, especially Prince!
