Leave Applications

Each fall, the Dean asks all faculty to submit their leave requests to the chair's office by December 1. Faculty should request all anticipated leaves by this date, including those that are contingent on external funding success or a personnel review. All leave requests should include a statement of the project proposed for the leave period, should provide a description of the plans made to carry out the work, should state clearly the type of leave, its term, its pay provisions (e.g., a full-year sabbatical at half pay supplemented by grant funds) and should include a completed leave request form.

No later than December 15, chairs forward the entire packet of departmental requests to the Dean, endorsing or not each request in a cover letter, and describing the leaves' impact on the department's program. In the case of applications for accelerated sabbatical, the Chair must also certify that the applicant meets the three criteria for an accelerated sabbatical as detailed in the policy. If replacement teaching money will be needed, the Chair should request it in the endorsement letter.

Note on pay schedules: If faculty on leave do not remain at full pay, the modified pay schedule for the fall semester normally covers the months of July through December; the modified schedule for the spring semester normally covers the months of January through June. If this schedule creates a cash-flow hardship, please inform the Dean, requesting an accommodation.
