Duke-DKU Faculty Teaching Policy & Replacement Agreement

Overview

This policy outlines the financial teaching policy and replacement arrangement for Trinity College of Arts & Sciences faculty members who teach and provide other support for Duke Kunshan University (DKU) in Kunshan, China.

Provost Sally Kornbluth approved this agreement on June 9, 2017. This agreement amends the original agreement of September 1, 2015.

Policy

  1. Arts & Sciences faculty members must apply for approval to teach at DKU. Such requests will be balanced against the department or program’s needs as follows:
  • Teaching plan for the upcoming academic year that was approved as part of the A&S budget process
  • Need to ensure department/program faculty are able to deliver the necessary core of courses for their majors and non-majors
  • Demand for overseeing graduate student Ph.D.s
  • Need for mentoring Graduation with Distinction and senior theses
  • Necessary coordination with faculty sabbaticals, leaves of absence, and fellowship opportunities.
  1. If a faculty member is approved to teach at DKU, the faculty member’s normal teaching load will determine the course buyout rate.
    1. If 3 or fewer sections will be bought out, the cost will be as follows:

One fourth of salary

2-1 teaching load

One sixth of salary

One eighth of salary

  1. If four or more sections will be bought out in any one department or program, there are two options:
    1. If the DKU teaching need is considered to be a permanent need, DKU will provide the financial cost of one Regular Rank faculty line at the median salary (plus fringe benefits) of the appropriate rank (such as Lecturer, Professor of the Practice, Assistant/Associate or full Professor).
    2. If appropriate, a faculty exchange of a DKU faculty member for a Durham Duke faculty member from Arts & Sciences can be arranged. In this case, there is no additional cost to DKU or to A&S.
  2. If a Durham Duke Faculty member will be a full visiting professor at DKU for a semester or more, DKY will pay the full cost of salary and fringe benefits of the visibility faculty member.

Procedure

  1. Faculty Member: While completing the DKU application, obtain a signed endorsement from your departmental/program Director of Undergraduate Studies, Department Chair, and Divisional Dean.

NOTE: The endorsement part of the application process ensures that Duke Durham teaching obligations are met.

  1. Divisional Dean:  Coordinate the DKU application request with the faculty leave request process (December 1 deadline for the following year).
