Staff Leave of AbsenceLast updated: October 20, 2015
Duke supports employees who may need to be away from work temporarily for a variety of situations. This support is offered through several leave of absence options.
Family Medical Leave (FMLA) is available for:
- employee medical needs such as the birth of a child
- medical needs for employee's family members
- care for injured covered service member
- qualifying exigency for covered military members
Duke also offers a Paid Parental Leave benefit to eligible employees.
Personal Leave is available for:
- educational leave
- other personal needs
- time away due to pregnancy for those not eligible for FMLA
Military Leave covers:
- reservists called to active duty
- other temporary obligations for reserve duty
Qualifying staff members absent for a period longer than 3 calendar days for a serious medical situation, including the birth or adoption of children, should request FMLA. The departmental business manager should follow the step-by-step instructions on the Duke HR Leaves website and notify the Office of Finance and Administration (OFA); please contact Susan Davis or Kathy Agusta for assistance.
All actions on regular leveled employees require budgetary approval and signature from the Office of Finance and Administration. Completed Payroll Leave of Absence forms should be mailed or hand-delivered to the Office of Finance and Administration.
Note: This step is necessary for both establishing the leave period and making adjustments to the leave period. OFA approval is required on each form.
The Duke HR Leaves website has been updated to include step-by-step instructions and guidelines for all of the types of leaves available. Please contact Susan Davis or Kathy Agusta for assistance.
