I serve as the academic dean for non-degree students (also known as Continuing Studies students) and all summer visiting students. Administratively, I am the director/dean of the Duke Office of Continuing Studies and Summer Session and a volunteer advisor for the Academic Advising Center.
I am a first generation college graduate who grew up in Mobile, AL, and whose bachelor’s degree, with majors in English and in Religion & Philosophy, was undertaken at Huntingdon College in Montgomery, AL. From Huntingdon I made my way to Duke Divinity School where I completed a Master of Divinity degree and then to Duke’s Graduate School where I earned a Ph.D. in Religion (American Religious Thought). My first professional position was as Assistant Dean for Admissions and Student Life in the Divinity School where I also taught courses in American Christianity, Religion in the South, and Women and Theology. Joining the staff of the then Duke Office of Continuing Education in 1990, I also taught a first-year seminar on “Religious Bestsellers and the Shaping of American Identity” for almost a decade and continue to serve as a college advisor for pre-major students.
