Call for Proposals - Trinity Research Enhancement (TRE) Funds for Undergraduate Research

December 7, 2017

Trinity Research Enhancement (TRE) Fund

Call for Proposals

The Trinity Research Enhancement fund (TRE) is seeking proposals for next year’s summer programs (May – August 2018), academic year programs (September 2018 – May 2019), or both periods.

TRE supports mentored undergraduate research that leads to graduation with distinction projects. This year, TRE funding will also provide students with the opportunity to present their work at the annual Undergraduate Research Symposium, and the possibility of being published in a new online undergraduate research journal. The new Duke undergraduate research journal Visible Thinking, sponsored by the Office of the Dean of Academic Affairs, will launch in February 2018. TRE funds are also used to partner with various endowments and grants to maximize support to our undergraduates at the departmental level.

TRE Funds will be awarded on a one-year basis and proposals must include plans to help sustain mentored research experiences offered to undergraduates, especially those related to departmental senior distinction programs.

We will consider proposals from individual departments or programs, multiple departments or programs, as well as from institutes, centers, or other interdisciplinary combinations.

In preparing your proposal, please:

  • Briefly describe the program for which you are seeking funding and provide a corresponding budget on how the funds will be used. Programs that leverage or match funds are encouraged and these funds should be noted so that we understand the comprehensive outlay for the project.
  • Indicate the number of undergraduates directly benefiting from the curricular or mentoring component of your initiatives.
  • If you have received previous funding, please provide a brief report detailing specific outcomes.
  • Indicate the success of your Graduation with Distinction program, or some of the challenges.

All proposals should be submitted to Cathy Lewis (Campus Box 90050, by January 10, 2018.

Please let me know if we can be of assistance as you prepare your proposal. Contact Cathy Lewis at or 919-613-6271
