Academic Dishonesty & Plagiarism
DUSs should encourage all faculty to submit cases involving academic dishonesty to the Office of Student Conduct in the Dean of Students Office for the following reasons:
- to ensure due process on behalf of the accused student;
- to provide a uniform process of review and judgment for all students regardless of departmental affiliation; and
- to avoid unilateral and unauthorized faculty sanctions.
Occasionally, students who have been given a unilateral sanction by a faculty member, namely a reduced grade, have insisted upon a Judicial Board hearing to air fully the unproved accusation against them. No doubt, greater justice can be assured by utilizing the Board from the onset of the problem. Faculty members who have questions about possible incidents of academic dishonesty or about the procedures for reporting academic dishonesty should call Dean Stephen Bryan at 668-3853.
